
Dr. Mabel Keith Howard, born in Darlington and educated in the Darlington County public schools, graduated from Atlanta University. She is thought to be the first African American woman in South Carolina to earn a college degree. Dr. Howard served as a superintendent of the Macedonia Baptist Church for 25 years and president of the Woman’s Baptist State Convention for 29years. Dr. Howard was also a trustee of Morris College.
